    By the way, I can see you wouldn't want a code of more than 10 numbers and 26 letters... or rather, 24 letters (you wouldn't want to use I or O as letters). So 34 would be the maximum. But why 16 ??! And why confuse it all by mixing letters and numbers anyway?

      I think Cali's puzzle neatly follows on from Oddy's as it leads us to a composer who was fond of Hexachords? (Can't contribute much else: hospital visits this week.)
      I hope the hospital visits go well, ferney! Some good South African grapes around at the moment

        actually, thinking about it, if F = 15 in hexcode, shouldn't FF = 225, rather than 255 ??

        15x15=225

            Ah you are right there, mercia... I didn't know that. It's not strictly germane to the answer, but there's no getting away from it: you are correct!

                        Yup! Strange, isn't it? Had you asked me if there was a connection between Roberto Gerhard and a 1960s gritty Brit flick about rugby league with Richard Harris, I would doubtless have pooh-pooh'd you!
