You mean an animal, rather than vegetable or mineral?

            Fascinating puzzle...

One assumes from 'composers' that we're talking classical (always worth checking, on the AA thread... )

I've been thinking in terms of Orpheus or Odysseus on the basis that everyone wrote about them at some point, but I guess mythic figures aren't animals...

Must hunt out that second thinking cap...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not sure how many clues I can give without giving too much away.

But I'm thinking of an object that has different names in the various languages .

"Essentially an animal" has me intrigued. Is Ox too prosaic an approach to the clue?

I think I have a glimmer of where you are heading ferney ... but then I saw "in different languages" so now I'm not so sure.

Dunno. I was thinking, briefly, Offenbach, Jules Verne, Gavin Bryars re Ox. Milhaud would fit, of course, but who else? I'll probably leave it for now and tend to my curry.

Been pondering this all afternoon and the same thought occurred to me - and plows breaking plains too...

                                Great puzzle, this.

                                Which Spanish guy, cloughie?
