Just to help you back down some dead-ends, our Arrigoni isn't a composer (at least as far as I and Grove know!), but he employed composers. Our Agostini is a composer.

I have Paolo Agostini, born 1593, sometime organist of S. Maria in Trasteverre, and succeeding Ugolini as Maestro at the Vatican Chapel, in 1627. He died in Sept 1629.

and Vincenzo Ugolini, 1580-1638, worked for Cardinal Arrigoni in Rome, 1614.

I guess you meant Santa Maria Maggiore: that's certainly from where Maria slipped into my clues.

As for Agostini, it seems he made a real studs-up challenge on poor old Ugolini if I may pick up your footballer lead To quote Grove, "On 16 February 1626 [U] was discharged [as maestro of the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's], probably because he refused to take part in a public composition contest with Paolo Agostini, who was appointed to succeed him the following day."

For anyone interested, the River-people offer some specimens of Agostini and Ugolini so we can check out whether they were right to boot out the latter in favour of the former. There may be one disc [KCC?] that offers both.

EDIT No, there dosn't seem to be a single disc with samples of both. Indeed, 'Paolo Agostini' brings up just one MP3 track where Ugolini manages at least three CD entries. So it looks as if posterity may have judged Mr U to be the real winner!
