Dohnanyi (Ernst von, later Erno): Variations on a Nursery Theme, the theme being Ah vous dirai-je maman if you're French or Baa baa black sheep if you're English. Anyone know what words our Ernst would have sung? I'm guessing the French.

ag: over to you for Foxtrot-Freddie!

ag: there was I thinking that your #29204 was directly triggered by my helpful #29203, and hence my reference to Erno in #29205. Extra congratulations for tackling the full North Face, not the easy route!

Churchdown Hill, Gloucestershire was home to Gerald Finzi (and Ivor Gurney?? - he is certainly closely associated with it). Finzi wrote an Interlude for Oboe and String Quartet. I knew those.

And egad, Finzi studied with Bairstow! The magic of Google!

Indeed very well done - I hadn't realised that In Terra Pax was heavily influenced by Finzi's memories of bell ringing on Churchdown Hill.

                G to you.......

Wish I had been able to participate more in the day's Associating... I've just taken delivery of a consignment of French persons who are staying for a week, my visits may be reduced as a result...

But I just wanted to say how good it is that LeMartinP is here and going great guns!

                  Bed time I think...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I always thought the tune that Ernie borrowed was 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. I don't think Katchen in either of his versions has been bettered in the work.

The Bairstow I was thinking of stopped many a Googl(e)y!

Is the right answer - if not necessarily by the right route!

                                Not sure about Organ loft!

The first five notes of the two nursery rhymes are the same and I have seen Baa baa black sheep quoted before !
