I was supposed to be at an afternoon lecture but it got too late so I gave up. Royal:

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra was awarded royal patronage in 1991.
Ditto Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1988

Northo has disappeared but I claim the coleslaw prize for the R (and Mercia was correct I'm sure).

So onwards and upwards with a S who connects a dried grape, a fairy, and a Renaissance.

Back slightly later than promised, but Flay has given you all the gen for 'R'.
In the years in question, the orchestras based in these cities became Royal.

Glad you got that off your chest
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
