The Mahler is the stormy song from "Kindertotenlieder" - "In diesem Wetter, in diesem Braus.." ("In this weather, in this storm...")
Shall do further research to complete the answer!

You are well on your way, my friend, and the 'X' (or whichever letter you prefer) is already yours!

Ah-ha!! And Hardy's "Weathers" - as set by Ireland (and Finzi, for that matter, I think)

"This is the weather the cuckoo likes,
      And so do I..."

      Oh. X. Great...

An X please to connect Platanus orientalis, Dutch zebras and Atossa.

(Advance warning: I have to go out at 3pm for an indeterminate time. Hope someone solves before then, otherwise we shall have a rather slow-moving thread for a while I'm afraid... )

Are we using x to signify a hybrid here, Cali?

In Handel's "Ombra mai fù", is sung by Xerxes to a tree (Platanus orientalis)

Filling in the gap, the football club XerxesDZB of Rotterdam are nicknamed "Zebras".

Yes, John Ireland's 'Weathers' is one of a group of three Hardy settings. Apparently the Finzi setting was incomplete, which was why I went for Ireland.

Well done Ammy! Yes, Xerxes is the word!

Yes - he was apostrophising the said tree in that aria in Xerxes (serse) by Handel
He was the son of Atossa, wife of Darius
Now - the Dutch Zebras. Look at Rotterdam and a load of balls...

You'll know when you've got it. Please feel free to move on to Y, Z or A - for I must away to collect a child from the station, and cannot be late

EDIT: scb has the last element

But Ammy: yours are the spoils

Ah! Explains why I'd never heard of it

Not that it's relevant, but a Parma-based Rugby Union team called the Zebre (Zebras) have joined the Rabo Direct Pro 12 league, replacing Airani.
