      Sack is an early word for sherry and conjoined with the conjunction 'but' is indeed that early slide instrument you mention.

                          Will cogitate on V while cycling! For the moment it seems utterly impenetrable

                          Thursdays are usually good for rubbers so he'll probably have solved it by the time I get back online
