I think a lot depends on how Google-able the clues are. For example, I got J by Googling "chaplain portsmouth barracks". Hopefully I've not left that particular avenue open

We're looking for a 20th century composer who sounds like Fricka. If that's not Fricker, it's a bit of a blow!

I'd benefit from an up-sum of where we've got to...

The puzzle so far:

What K sounds as if it was made by

a character from a 19th century opera - Fricka

and a namesake who was an 18th century composer - this is the stumbling block

accompanied by a 20th century composer? - Peter Racine Fricker? .... no, I can now see what mercia means, doesn't fit

There are other composers with a name sounding like Fricka. Once you hit on the right one then that name should take you straight there. In cryptic crossword land, Peter Racine Fricker would be shorter.

If for no other reason, I am grateful to this puzzle for the following: in hunting for the 18th century answer, I have made the acquaintance for the first time of the almost unbelievably named Willoughby Bertie. Son and father of Willoughby Bertie respectively, he had a hand in the careers of JC Bach among others. Here is the biog of the splendid Fourth Earl of Abingdon:

funnily enough I came across the Earls of Abingdon when somebody on the lonely George thread said his subspecies wasn't named after Abingdon [which it was actually]
