certainly does work and it is / was what I had in mind
good ol' yellow pages
a clean sweep (more kitchenware) for Caliban
o....o.....over to you
O God yes, do you remember that syrupy patronising voice on the ads "Good old Yellow Pages"... trying to transform a phone book into some treasured aspect of British historical tradition...
O - O - Uh - O
Well...
From the most northerly of its kind to two most serene rivals... What musical O links all three?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
You are on a couple of right tracks, mon cher Hercule

I have to depart now for a nice client lunch at an Italian restaurant (that is not a clue...). I'll be back during the afternoon, I'll wait a little before giving a clue or two, if requested

Shall I wait until people log on in the evening before giving a little clue, or would you like one now?

Haha it's ages since I've heard 'clever clogs' used in anger - a favourite expression of my dear late lamented grandmother
"...the isle is full of noises,

No... Hercule's #2430 & #2431 are the only two helpful pointers so far.

... of course, Venice was not the only 'Serenissima' - so too were Lucca, Genoa, and San Marino - and indeed also the Lithuanian Polish Commonwealth [1569-1795]. But I don't think any of this helps...
Venices of the North? - I know about Omsterdom in de nederlands.... and Ootrecht...
Ro la la Monsieur Vinteuil - you're close with Venices of the North - but forget Holland.
I'll give a clue when someone asks... I happen to know rubberknickers is out of the loop tonight at a St David's Night dinner. Is that where Anna's gone - long time no hear...
PS Also forget the Lithuanian Polish Commonwealth

... having gone from Arnold Östman (of Drottningholm) to Ostrobothnia - I was wondering whether Oslo had ever (like Birmingham) been called "the Venice of the North"?

There are no places beginning with O involved in the answer.
"...the isle is full of noises,

To add a little more help, the "O" is musical, the three constituent parts of the question are not entirely so.
