          well my W was Egon Wellesz, whom I'm afraid I've not heard of

          but I'm not sure of the Nordic master, or 12-tone original

            Spot on mercs!

            Nordic = Finnish

            The 12-tone originator wound up in USA and taught Wellesz

              I feel like I've got egg on my face not getting this!
              Not sure of the Finnish reference, but he was taught by Arnie.
              Later became the first scholar in Britain to research Byzantine Music; his Oxford History of Music volume is still a reference work only slightly outdated!

                  Nicely done, fhg!

                  The Finnish connection is Sibelius - Robert Layton was taught by Wellesz and wrote several books about Sibelius and many informed and informative reviews of recordings of music Sibelius, Wellesz and others for Gramophone

                  I think mercs got us started on the right trail - over to you for the X, Y, Z or even A depending on how strong you're feeling mercs!

                      Yum... sausages and egg... Making me hungry now.

                      I've just got the Ronay reference... another Egon

                      Been distracted by other matters. Not sure I'd have got that. The Sibelius link was a heck of a jump!

                      Mercs, do you want the next one? I got the feeling you were handing over. I could take it off your hands if not, but of course ferns has more rights as I got the square root of diddly-squat.

                      EDIT: too late!!!

                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
                      Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
