Either three hours is "or so" or I forgot to add VAT.

Either way, I'm back now should anyone wish to take on the D.

Clearly something to do with D-Day (6.6.44)...

And Honegger's 5th is in D and is called "Di tre re" ('Re' being the sol-fa name for D)... referring "to the ending pianissimo note of D in basses and tympani that is the same for all three movements of this mysterious work. But the phrase could also be interpreted as “the three kings,” a possible religious reference"

      Any good?

So is the answer just... D?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

So far, so very good (any ideas about the "jar" clue to make the Music connection?)

So is the answer just... D?
        - so the two Ds? (Perhaps less Musical than the others. )

Sounds like you've got it, Anna!

(EDIT: the 'jar' thing eludes me completely....)

Well I may have got one element but you got two and we are still awaiting you to finish it with a Jar! I'm afraid I had not realised it was the anniversary of D-Day

Still trying to figure that out. Away for an hour or two now...

Cali, or should I now call you Caz or Cazzer? Could it be a soldiers' drinking song?
                  (I too am away now)

(the "younger piper" is Dee Dee Pfeiffer, younger sister of Michelle.)

Well, if anyone isn't away, Cazza got the D connection to be D. 6th June is D-day; Honneger's Sixth Symphony is the three res (or 3Ds); and Anna got Dee Dee Wilde; the well-known (to many gentlemen - and some ladies - of a certain age) Pan's Person.

Anyone care to hazard a jar Musical connection with D-day?

                      (Or, should I say "D- d a y?)

EDIT: Oh, that didn't work! I typed the letters of "day" to be much further spaced than they appear here.

... perhaps I should stick with "Cali"?

Maurice Jarre wrote the music for the film The Longest Day ???
