Myfanwy Piper - Death in Venice. (But others did all the hard work).
(I've only just seen #2336. So it looks like it's subcontrabass or Pianorak).
    A good question, I thought.

In all fairness subcontrabass did all the hard work!

I've got an easy W prepared - but only if that's ok with subcontrabass.

          Try this:

What W is shared by (amongst others) a favourite son with a little book, a rebellious archer, and a composer shot by a cook?

A guess at two of the three:
Wilhelm Bach - favourite son - Orgelbuchlein
                  Wilhelm Tell - rebellious archer.

Damn - I was just about to say that - Wilhelm was also Webern's middle name, he was shot by an army cook

Well done. The third one is better known by his first name.

Is it me or rubbernecker? (I have an 'X' ready...)

I would say you Ofca, and I was going to suggest you be relieved of X. But if you have it ready, then bring it on!

                            OK, here goes:
The first knew a lot about counterpoint; the second was inspired by a Swedish botanist; and the third gave a singular performance of a national song. The three are finally (sic) connected by 'X'.

Hmmm, without Googling: Fux, Xenakis, Hendrix?

So they end in X? That's very devious, Ofca. I'm already thinking Francaix for the middle one: L'Horlorge du Fleur inspired by Linnaeus (..love that piece!)

EDIT: ...and Tapiola's just got in ahead with his grapeshot...!
