Well cloughie appears to have gorn off, so I think the best thing to do is to offer the solution up to those others still around: it is indeed Quilter but why? nothing difficult but just a way of deciding who gets the crack at the R innit

So come on, Lettsby Avenue ....

Anna - it's in fact a bacon and sage brioche. You can even see a picture here, in a blog by someone who recounts a meal there: http://noodlenotes.wordpress.com/201.../pied-a-terre/ (the pic captioned 'The Bread!' enlarges if you click on it)... There were no big bits of bacon in it so I suspect crispy bacon was almost pulverised and mixed into the brioche dough with the sage... Trial and error would get it right! Super-Cali-Fragilistic!!

Ammy: will focus on Mr Quilter presently!

            Knorr taught Quilter.
Quilter was a friend of Philip Heseltine (aka calum da Peter Warlock) and they shared accommodation at one point?

Well, as I said earlier, before cloughie pointed out the correct answer, I was happily convinced that I was onto something with the stock cubes (apparently, the company once used the tune of Que sera, sera in one of their adverts)!

I won't be able to put an S together until tomorrow, so if cloughie gets back before then, I think the laurels are rightly his. Failing that, I'll see you all in the morning.

Not sure... How about I slip in a quick 'nightwatchman' R...

... to link Brahms, Karl Goldmark and Carl Reinecke in a way which would have been topical until recently, certainly where I am.

Oh an early morning toot!, almost right on the button from Anna!! The three answers are in fact identical to one another - no Sonatas or Maidens invoived!

It's too close to mess around: they all three wrote a Rain Song - I was thinking the German "Regenlied"... Reinecke's I think for chorus, the other two for solo voice.

good skills!!! I think ferney may be working on his S... but maybe you're happy with your win, without having to set one?

After an early cuppa, I think I'm going to grab some more
