The W is a name which is in each of the three, the spelling differs slightly in one of them!

Almost, they all sound the same but one has an extra letter!

I remain puzzled, which was undoubtedly and understandably your intention!

Are the reconstructions musical à la Payne, Deryck Cooke etc?

I've got this idée fixe that it's Wicker as in Wicker Man (e.g. Iron Maiden & the film & festival - burning at midnight), the Wickerman Festival in Scotland...

I think I might have it....

              Welles?

              Orson of that ilk made

              - Chimes at Midnight based on the Falstaff story
              - A number of Welles's movies had to be reconstructed (Magnificent Ambersons, Touch of Evil) having been re-edited by the studios...

And then there's a jazz trombonist called Dickie Wells (which 'sounds like' Welles)

But what's the damned cricket connection? Other than http://www.wellscricketclub.com/

is there a piece where the trombones play the same note throughout ?

Dickie Bird - cricket umpire ?

But Caliban's suggestion of Welles, Welles and Wells is the opposite isn't it - by having one less letter? I confess I hadn't looked at the question until this morning and I'm stumped for any alternative answer!

The reconstructions are from scratch by listening to recordings.

Quite so Anna, it's not Wells, not Bird, the cricket connection is a BJism from TMS.

The sound-alike relates to the name-spelling not specifically the music.

are the reconstructions of one particular piece or several?
is the W the reconstructor or the composer of the piece(s) being reconstructed?
or the name of the piece(s) being reconstructed?

the only things I can find being reconstructed from recordings are an organist's improvisations
                            or possibly piano pieces
