Maybe he's being literal... We have no idea of the location or extent of mercia's estates, nor of his habitual manner of entertaining his entourage!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I believe Rosy's gone too. Wish I were there with them at the rave, my shirt split to the waist, bronzed chest, shark's tooth medallion... Now where did I put my mankini?

Sorry Anna, my granny died 50 years ago. I just don't get this. How did mercs get Childe? Is it Wilfred Rowland Childe? The only connected H I can find is Harrow. As for a cattle connection: "Cattle Trough at the Junction of Bessborough Road and West Street, Harrow. Grade: II listed building."

I claim my five pounds, Lobby

well fernie mentioned Lord Byron and anna mentioned child, so I thought of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, which apparently contains the section
There were his young barbarians all at play,/There was their Dacian mother—he their sire,/Butchered to make a Roman holiday
which wiki says has given us Roman Holiday to mean an event enjoyed at the expense or suffering of others (a definition of AA?). Don't know if this is the holiday part of the question. The poem inspired Berlioz's Harold in Italy, I guess. I've found a Judy Garland song by Harold Arlen called I could go on singing (till the cows come home) http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/so...comehome.shtml
don't know if this is the correct cattle reference and not sure if there's another element still to get

none of the above may be at all relevant, which would be funny

Good morning mercia. Those in bold are what I have on the card, so that leaves one more to go but I'll happily accept Judy Garland if you like!! And it has nothing to do with anyone's granny, but the author of the libretto of a work by RVW.

Very devious, mercs. I hope it's correct for all our sakes!

                        From The Cows Come Home:
I must vocalise till you shout, "Enough already"
                        Well I'm shouting!

and a very good morning to you too Anna, hope your feet are dry

ah, so that was the child clue
Vaughan Williams, Hugh the Drover, libretto Harold Child

Yes mercia, it's Harold Child (1869–1945), writer and theatre critic) who RVW asked to write the libretto of Hugh the Drover together with Childe Harold (Byron) and Harold in Italy (Berlioz)
Yes, my feet are warm and dry thank you, river has receded, road is open, all is back to normal for the time being. Dawn must have gone on holiday as there were no rosy fingers this morning, just greyness and pouring rain (again)
