reading the wiki entry on Ballard Berkeley reminds me of having heard him on the radio speak of his experiences of the London blitz - for example witnessing people stealing from dead bodies in the aftermath of bombing, to the extent of removing fingers to obtain rings. I remember him saying something to the effect that in his opinion the so-called "blitz spirit" was a myth.
