    Children?

    Children's Corner (Debussy)
    Children of Lir (Harty)
and, ermm... some of the suffragettes had children

Children is the answer. Hamilton Harty (I stuck in 'hearty' in one of my replies) wrote The Children of Lir - a rather nice tone poem. Debussy wrote Children's Corner.

Children cannot vote and neither could the suffragettes.

So all we now need is the last English composer who wrote a piece that featured children...the title of which has something to do with what you see when you look up and is also the name of a musical.

Cakewalk was my other hidden clue...Golliwog's Cakewalk from Children's Corner.

EDIT: I should say part of the title is something to do with what you see when you look up.

EDIT EDIT: Under the circumstances, I should say that he is a very well known English composer.

Spot on...rubbernecker. I'm not sure who's turn it is next?

Starlight Express ...A family of children, trapped in the oppressive world of adults, forms a secret society whose members collect stardust and live in star caves.

I'm afraid I shall be 'hors de combat' for the rest of today so I would suggest Tapiola provide the D

I don't see how anybody could have possibly got the answer from the original question, especially as there was nothing to indicate that the answer was a plural.
Any chance of a reasonably gettable, helpfully worded, 'D'?

Late corrections/revisions to the clues don't help either.
'There was this English composer ...no, hang on, he wasn't English, he was Irish but lived most of his life in England ... or the other way round...'

You're not related to the late Iain MacLeod by any chance, are you?

No - but he WAS thought, by many, to be too clever by half.

Well I thought it was a good clue, BTS, and one that encouraged surely what this thread is about: a bit of creative thinking, entertainment, social interaction... Circuitous need not imply something negative.

It might take me a while to construct a "D" this evening, if it hapens at all. I don't know what the rules are about this, but are there any volunteers for a D?
