The "smiting" reference was to Caliban's #17574 smacking his forehead, it was not a clue. <doh>

So if it is not the composer, but it is connected with opera, and is a name and is 20th century is it an opera character or is it a performer?

The first is a performer and might well be connected with operas in general.

No more clues for a bit - busy just now. I think there's enough been said to get it.

I think not, otherwise someone would be nearer to solution!

Is the 17th century reference Shakespearian, or a specific musical reference?

I can see that it's very annoying to have people just guessing randomly, so I won't do it any more
I thought I was getting a lukewarm reception to flowers so my final thought is lilies

I'm assuming the somewhere South of Wales is France? (Rather than Bristol or Somerset!) The nuclear element is baffling at the moment and the Debussy indirect involvement, would this be something like soundtrack to a film (actually I'm just talking to myself)
Edit: I see mercia has said lilies, that was my thought as regards Debussy

merc, I agree but has anyone got a single claw on this one yet?

Is the oblique Debussy reference earlier a work beginning with L or is it linked to one of his vocal works?

We have already established Cornwall for the film. Mercs nearly sniffed out the flower, then gave up There is a colourful children's 17th century song about it. Now leave me alone....
