Picture the scene - say Piccadilly in the post-lunch lull. A black cab has stopped and is being approached at some speed by two parties, one a be-suited Mayfair gentleman in overcoat and bowler, the other the glamorous actress Coral Browne in a huge fur and a tasteful hat.

Both parties are attempting to get into the cab through the same door. Amid the struggle and cursing the cabbie seizes the chance to extricate everyone with minumum loss of face.

"Sorry guv, the lady was first"

"What lady?!" sneers Mayfair Man

With a sharp elbow into his well-lunched stomach and one final heave, CB gains entrance with "This fucking lady!"

It was Peter Brook's Oedipus in 1968. This from the Evening Standard:

'Brook's 1968 Old Vic staging of Seneca's Oedipus plumbed the sexual darkness of incest as Oedipus (John Gielgud) slept with his mother, Jocasta (Irene Worth), and put his eyes out as a self-punishment. His mother committed suicide, impaling herself on a downstage pyramidal spike. At which point Brook upended the tragedy by bringing on a massive phallus, followed by a New Orleans jazz band playing "Yes, we have no bananas'."



The Coral Browne story is corroborated in many places. I also hope it's true!
