Phew! That took some stretching and goading, but we got there in the end. I assume everyone is happy for Caliban to take the W...

Puzzled as to why Vernon Handley is 'affectionately dead'? (Or did it happen in friendly fire?)

I think he was Tod Handley, Tod being German for dead. Oh, do not say the only good German is a dead German ...? But Vernon was always known as Tod, short for Toddler I think due to his funny way of walking which carried on late in life. That is my theory.

VH was affectionately known as 'Tod' viz. Dead. It was a shorthand conflation, and I didn't mean it in bad taste, given that he is sadly deceased. OK?

And please, let's have no mention of Verklarung Hickox, either

                What's the W?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm thinking of the obvious: Ibert, Bernstein and Knussen. Anything to do with weddings?

Ah, good ol' Caliban. The original Yorkshire white van man.

I reckon the W is Tom Waits, it makes sense, I think. Think about it.

I'm not sure the gritty songster has ever been so much as a blip on Caliban's generally untroubled musical radar, but I'd love you to prove me wrong!

                                And, Tom Waits:

A cloud lets go of the moon
Her ribbons are all out of tune
She is skating on the ice
In a glass in the hands of a man
That she kissed on a train
And the children are all gone into town
To get candy and we are alone in the house here
And your eyes fall down on me

And I belong only to you
The water is filling my shoes
In the wine of my heart there's a stone
In a well made of bone
That you bring to the pond
And I'm here in your pocket
                                Curled up in a dollar

And lots more Tom Waits, I claim my £5 !!!!
