No; for once I just knew the answers!

Sorry for the delay: A has caused more difficulty than I was expecting. Try this mixture of Music and Literature:

    Pears well Met
    Bogarde looking at you, kid
    Hurt on Long Island

    ... which A in common?

        Yup!

Peter Pears made his Met debut as ...
Dirk Bogarde played him in Visconti's film (and was very sniffy about Britten's opera at every opportunity!)
John Hurt played the Aschenbach character in the film Death on Long Island based on Mann's novella.

        Well, that didn't take long!
        A B cloughie conundrum, please.

... yes, I think 'indirect' would fit - or, perhaps, 'détourné'...

OK as nobody has volunteered a B which

                    Sounds Spanish but further north.
                    Used to be northern

With respect, m'learned friend means Love and Death on Long Island by Gilbert Adair, with certain similarities to Mann's Death in Venice

I enjoyed them both, in different ways; haven't read the Mann for twenty years - last time I found it all a little too earnest and heavy: the Adair, on the other hand, is a delight - wry, painfully funny...
