Problems with iPlayer

In answer to Silly Question No 1 the window provided has no visible volume control icon for clicking. And I have no volume control on my own computer - not that I need one, as uploads etc can always be volume-controlled for audibility on the slider below the images.

The iPlayer flash window definitely has a volume control. If you navigate to the programme via the R3 schedules you will see a loudspeaker on the pop-up panel - click on it to adjust the volume. If you use the iPlayer webpages instead, you need to run your mouse over the image to reveal the loudspeaker volume control.

All Windows PCs have a software (Windows) volume control - it is part of the operating system. Often it can be accessed via a speaker icon on the bottom right group when you look at the screen. If the loudspeaker isn't showing there the Windows audio controls can be accessed via the control panel (Start/Control Panel/'Hardware and Sound' in Windows 7).

I realise that the problem is likely to be something else but those two are most definitely the things to check first.

There must be some deep-seated problem. I get the pop up panel but no loudspeaker visible on it. I've checked my computer volume levels and they're OK. I'll leave it for the time being.

No pink starter arrow, ff, just a big sign across that picture which reads:

"You need to upgrade Flash to Version 10.1.0 or higher to play Black Is a Country: Episode 1
Upgrade to Flash player now".

I tried this yesterday, but then got cold feet halfway through when a pop-up suddenly appeared saying that I had upgraded to this system last October. (Must have happened when my computer technician did all the intial setting up of this computer, reinstating all my previous files). The next step in the procedure warned that all my firewalls and other systems (can't now remember which) might shut down. At which point I stopped, and went back over the procedure to find no statement assuring me that my systems would or should automatically reinstate once the upgrade had completed.

actually Flash is the usual attack vector for viruses (matched only by Adobe pdf reader - personally I refuse to have anything by these companies on my machines - I don't know if iPlayer is now usuable under Linux but initially it was a pain - if I were truely paranoid I'd suggest that as both companies are known to have planted backdoors in their software and that flash in older incarnations could be told to turn on any microphone + camera on the machine that in reality iPlayer probably could readily serve as Orwell's telescreen - the constant reminder to move to a new version allows targeted downloads for your machine - it was certainly used in several attacks on unwary terrorists who were sent specially crafted versions.

I stopped using Adobe for pdfs ages ago for that very reason. I use Foxit Reader
