    Problems with iPlayer

Yesterday I tried getting onto the iPlayer for several programmes I had missed. I managed to flag these up in the usual way without trouble, but although the usual left-screen panel duly appeared with the programme I was after, not a sound came through.

I have tried re-registering my password, and received the usual email of confirmation and clicked it in the usual way, but it hasn't made any difference.

Is anyone else experiencing problems? There doesn't seem to be any Problems-solving link to the page, so I'd be most grateful for suggestions.

    Which programme were you after?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

      Hi French Frank

It was "Black is a Country" last Thursday 5th January, 11.30 am on Radio 4. I've also tried a couple from Radio 3 and same problem, so it's not confined to Radio 4.

This works on my machine (with Google Chrome on Windows XP):

Singer-songwriter Erykah Badu explores the music generated by the Black Power movement.

Can you get it here (chat until 1 minute in).

My link's the same as Andrew's.

              Hi Frances

Yes the problem applies to any iPod I attempt. The odd thing is that there is an arrow in the top right hand corner of the iPod panel which, when clicked, links to (among other things) a voice giving advice on all the advantages of iPod - which I can hear perfectly! Oh, and no, I haven't had any updates of any kind of late, codec or other.

That option requires me to install Adobe Flashplayer 11, which, before completion, warned me that my Firefox would shut down... at which point I had worries!

Well, I have updated my Firefox, and using Andrew's and French Frank's kindly suggested links, tried to install an Adobe Flashplayer system I apparently already had - all to no avail.

I'm too stressed out to try anything else tonight - maybe I'll have another go tomorrow - but thanks everyone for the help.

P.S. sorry - don't have a solution to your technical problem.

On the assumption that you are using Windows -

Silly question No 1: Have you checked the volume control for the iPlayer flash window (and your PC's volume control for that matter)?

Silly question No 2: Does the time played that is showing in the flash window increase in the normal manner?

Once you've followed johnb's advice above, which seems the most logical thing to do, there is also an iplayer help page (the links provided by Andrew and frenchie work fine for me, unsure why you had to enter password though?)

Hi John - thanks for your reply!

Yes it's Windows I have. The window I was using (and have always used without problems hitherto) is the ordinary iPlayer window obtained by clicking on any of the iPlayer programmes advertised.

In answer to Silly Question No 1 the window provided has no visible volume control icon for clicking. And I have no volume control on my own computer - not that I need one, as uploads etc can always be volume-controlled for audibility on the slider below the images.

As to Silly question No 2, no, there is no time played showing.

I did consider accessing via FF's thread in the earlier message, but a message covering the opening image instructed me to upgrade to Flash 11. Halfway through doing so a panel popped up telling me that I already have Flash 11; I was also warned that all my relevant systems/firewalls etc would close down if I proceeded. Having no certainty if I would ever get them back - and in any case asking myself why should I have to go to all this trouble - I decided to proceed no further.

                              Hi Anna

                              Thanks for your concern

The iPlayer Help is no help tbh - I stuck in a question - "The programme will not play" - and was presented with any number of jargonistically indecipherable interpretations to all intents unrelated to my question - none of which led me anywhere except into a head spin. I shall get onto my computer whizz tomorrow - but tbh it's not life or death if I can't play programmes I missed on iPlayer.

                              Best wishes
