I was very lucky to meet him and his wife on a holiday in Italy. The friend I was with had sort of epileptic seizure while we at breakfast in the hotel. They were both incredibly kind and helpful, very concerned for his welfare. It was one of those times when you recognise well known people, but don't wish to disturb them, but they could not have been nicer.
Incidentally, he was preparing a version of Blockbusters for Saudi Arabia after his holiday, and planning to record five episodes a day !

      A very kind man.

Yes RIP Bob Holness. I always mix him up with William G Stewart {?} another quiz master good at his job.

No, I don't think you're confusing them salymap. William G Stewart, if memory serves, was both the Presenter and Director (I believe) of that excellent Channel 4 quiz programme 15-to-1.

          Kind regards,

          Mario

PS. I should have wished BH RIP of course.

I 'met' him & his wife twice en passant in the much-missed Upper Street Fish Shop, Islington London N1. For the most part people left him alone but the occasional cry of "I'll have a 'P' please Bob!" was met with a kindly smile & great patience but not from Olga the much-missed shop's owner who would charge out like a pouter pigeon from behind the counter & scare the miscreant off

Blockbuster was a big favourite in the house I lived in at university. The other "must sees" were Camberwick Green at lunchtime and on Fridays The Tube. I used to side with Bob against all the snotty nosed kids who were rude to him. They thought they were being clever but he was pleasant. I rate pleasant above clever. He will be missed.

(Actually I have just remembered that I also met him in the 1970s at the Kenley Air Show and have his autograph)

Saly, William G Stewart hosted Fifteen to One and he was, incidentally, producer of many of the Tommy Cooper programmes. I met him a couple of times about 15 years ago.

I always remember Bob Holness as quizmaster on Junior Criss-Cross Quiz in the 1960's, a sort of precursor to Blockbusters and a firm favourite of my childhood.

I spent a most enjoyable afternoon with him when he'd agreed to present and inflight show I was producing. He was very complimentary about my playlist and script and it couldn't have been easier work.

One of life's genuinely nice people. They're out there alright but not always easy to find so you cherish such encounters all the more.

Hold on, that's four of us who met him. How many more for goodness sake?
