the Royals Who Rescued the Monarchy.

Part 1 last night seems a good straightforward account so far,[half way though recording], of the man who was King when I was born.

I remember in my first week at school in 1935, being lined up with my new school friends to wave a flag as the King and Queen drove past along the shabby Kennington street.

Its all about distraction from real issues.

most people I know think the monarchy is a waste of time and money,(at best) and most think the olympics are an expensive distraction.(27000 troops and police ?)
Then again, most people I know don't visit this board !!

It's all part of an Establishment project, a long-term tutorial (the film The King's Speech was about explaining where The Queen "came from") to get us (particularly young people and immigrant communities) all up-to-speed about the recent history of the monarchy and its central role in British society and history. French frank's right about the urgent need being around the Jubilee & Olympix but there's going to be a significant death or two in the next few years (witness Prince Philip's extended hozzie stay) and the dolt who is next-in-line is not exactly popular so they want us to get a sense of history before he's landed on us.

After all, it started with a previous Prince of Wales chucking all his toys out of the pram, so nothing's certain except that the monarchy will continue for the forseeable future. We don't have any politicians around with the courage to address the Monarchy Project aka republicanism.

But then I'm sure people said that in Egypt a year or so ago ...

You have a point there, salymap but I'd prefer to be treated as an adult rather than as a child. If the country votes for Pres. Blair then we'll have deserved him. And at least we'll be able to get rid of him (it'll be in the constitution )

There is more than one model for a republic. The Irish and German models have non-political elected presidents.

we do not necessarily need to have a president ..... a head of state can take many forms, as i have posted afore i prefer the Swiss arrangements for a head of state ... a collective body with no fetishised individual ....

i have just watched the programme and have guiltily realised my ignorance of his role and longevity ....

I don't think it's necessary to be a monarchist to find the history of the royal family interesting. I see it at least partly as social history. I enjoy seeing how history repeats itself, or not, as the case may be. I enjoy the sense of continuity and the events that disrupt it from time to time. I like seeing family resemblances, fashions and the way people behaved in the past. I remember Queen Mary, but not George V.

We have to remember salymap lives very close to Napoleon 3 - or has he moved again?

No Anton, Nap 3 moved to Farnborough Hampshire in 1888, where he remains to this day.
