    2012 New Year Honours

Good to see that Antonio Pappano has been awarded a knighthood for services to music in the 2012 New Year Honours list : http://www.opera-britannia.com/index...d=624&Itemid=1

Entertainer Ronnie Corbett and golfers Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy are recognised with New Year Honours, alongside hundreds of unsung heroes.

Also, an OBE for Ronald Corp.

Call me picky but it does upset me when the BBC spell "led" as "lead". See Preddie. It happens so many times.

Ronnie Corbett is a local man. Seems reasonable.

I know one of the Civil Servants. Very unusual guy. Almost weird.

Fair enough to Steve Lillywhite but I would have preferred an award going to his ex mother-in-law Jean MacColl.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Do people think the classical music world gets enough of this kind of public approbation?

Conductors do all right, don't they? (And administrators?)

Add: Ho, ho, ho! A Knight at the Opera! Very good!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Very good news. He was fascinating to teach in a class of 12 year-olds in a 1970s comprehensive school - not always well-behaved and not accepted as conventionally musical by the school establishment. His talent stood out though - even if I never imagined he would reach the heights of the Royal Opera.

I'm more than happy for Tony to get a gong

I could easily list many composers and musicians who are ignored when these things come around .........
by and large (in the Arts) they are given to those who have the greatest visibility

subcontrabass must have better eyesight than me. The print in my newspaper gets smaller with each category; by the time I reached the MBEs I gave up.

Deserved, I am sure - but perhaps typical of the present government to reward an ex-Director of Music of Eton rather than one of his equivalents in a comprehensive school.

Am I to take it that all members (contributing or not) of this Forum have been overlooked AGAIN?

Does that include those who would decline to be associated with such dated nonsense?
