    Time's up proclaims Gorbacheff

Golly! Good old Gorby has called for that little man with the piggy eyes to "step down." The most significant political move of the decade I would say. Acorns and all that. But will it get the mob off the streets?

God Almighty Sydney! It's Christmas Day! The mob should be at home quaffing loads of vodka or Guinness, and so should you!

Pardon me, Frances, I'm not great on orthodoxy. But I'm glad to see you up and about. What are you having?

don't drink these days tho do use it in cooking (must admit I feel better and can get some work done in evenings - my GP was also pleased as my blood pressure dropped!) - also don't eat meat so evening meal probably a prawn curry (my friends joke I don't eat anything that had an active sexlife!) - enjoying a CD of English Anthems whilst summarising early 18th C wills at present as seems a good day to keep clear of R2.25 .

yes, it had become Radio 2.5 - but over recent weeks Radio 2.25 sounds more like it...

How old are you? The Russians have not celebrated Christmas on January 6th since 1900.

well the Russian Orthodox Christmas Mas in the 1970's + early 80's was held on our Jan 6th in all places I went to (and if you want to look up the old R3 schedules before the current vandalism you will find they often broadcast part or all of the midnight service from the Cathedral in London) on that day - the 'winter festival' in USSR went on a little beyond this date

That is the Christmas Eve service. The broadcasts were at midnight on 6th/7th January (recorded earlier in the evening). I was in the choir at the Russian Cathedral for that service in 1969.

sorry it was the midnight service I went too (or at least part of it - not used to standing in a fairly packed space for several hours and not feeling I was anywhere near old enough to use the few chairs placed around the side wall near the door)- this was at the small church buried within some ministry complex almost opposite the then Intourist Hotel in centre of Moscow - the difference in days is because the Russian Orthodox operate on the Julian Calendar - a further day slip came in 2000 as this was a leap year in one and not in the other - possibly my memory re the exact date was hazy tho I always chose the week after that containing the 1st Jan (for some reason that was always premium price - guess midnight in Red Square on 31 Dec/1 Jan was the attraction) - in those days either Intourist or Intourist/Thompson did the only affordable package tours (you could go individually but very expensive unless you went in summer as certain Trade Unions had links to summer resorts)

2000 was a leap year in both Gregorian and Julian Calendars. The last time there was a discrepancy was 1900.

The Russians celebrate on 7 January - but the Armenians still celebrate Christmas on 6 January...
