I found Sir Mark's opinion on the music of Malcolm Arnold very interesting. Sir Mark clearly loves the music of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Tippett. I feel that he would love to programme far more English music than he does already if wasn't for the financial implications. In other words the number of bums on seats.

With the news from the English Music Festival that their 2012 programme will open with the first public performance of Moeran's Symphony No.2 (realised from sketches), with the BBC CO conducted by Martin Yates, it would be interesting to hear whether Sir Mark might consider a performance, as the composer was actually writing the new work for Barbirolli and the Halle Orchestra, but died before its completion.

What a huge variation in price there is for the CD of that realisation. Presto Classical are asking £10.75 plus p&p, for instance, whereas hmv.com want only £4.99 including p&p.

Sir Mark explains why he thinks that Elgar's second symphony is greater than the first symphony. I like both symphonies but I tend to play the first and the Payne realisation of the third more than the second.
