Yes, thank you, mercs . For reasons unusual we had Christmas lunch last Sunday, so today I was able to suit myself...

I'm late coming to the posts from da Jazbo and salymap - to whom special greetings, in different ways.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Best wishes, eighth, and to all on here who offer so much in the ways of knowledge and wisdom, my incalculable thanks. And to french frank for hosting the best party in town, year round.

Belated good wishes to all here, and especially to salymap. I echo all that Anna and others have said.

Did anyone see Tom Adès on Christmas University Challenge? Hilarious !!

he impressed me, winning the game for his team with diverse knowledge. Martin Bell didn't appear to know anything but adopted a deep-thinking pose. Rather a lot of silly Christmas-connected questions though in these 'celeb' games.

Yes - one five-point penalty aside, Ades did well, I thought (certainly did more to help his team than the dim bishop on the other end from Ades, who just grinned gormlessly throughout).

The only decent contest in this c'leb series - all the others have had scores like 210 - 25: made me realise how good the real students are!

Indeed. An equally poor performance from (Sir) Bob Kerslake a former Head of the Home Civil Service. He's still Head of Communities and Local Govt., not really one of the Great Departments of State. Demoted? Who can say? Vide Peter Principle

My thoughts precisely! Just finished watching it. Also, the red-dressed author who captained seem to do nothing but repeat (often inaccurately, like a bad Classic FM presenter) the answers Adès gave her. Young Tom needs to pay more attention to the soup course on his Italian peregrinations in future!
