I wish all on here to be snug, warm and safe tomorrow and may your meal be tasty, and you never want for chocolate on Boxing Day to cheer you up

Allier, but the greeting was low walloon german, dredged up from my childhood just to be different (aka to show off!).

Allier? Not sure about the wink, unless there's something I don't know about. There are some local folkdance traditions, one of which includes a clog being whirled about on the end of a lanyard at head height and then ankle level: it looks quite dangerous. There are plenty of music festivals, as there are over most of France.

Not much in the way of traditions de noel around here, everybody is so tired from the curistes/touristes April to October that they hibernate. Mostly an excuse to eat and drink - rather like the UK in fact.

I take your point, but thats at least one department away. Allier, much less mountainous, is historically le Bourbonnais but was incorporated in the Auvergne Region in the 80s. Locals still refer to themselves as Bourbonnais.

(A guidebook contains the throwaway line "the dukes became quite important historically. They were the Bourbons, you may have heard of them.")

No he went before he set out...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
