Cheery thoughts - thank you Google!

I was looking up the details of this CD - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...&condition=new - which is good, for the Naxos thread over on CD Review.

I tried this on the Zavvi site, and found Ben Luxon's Decca version (excellent), probably the best - http://www.zavvi.com/cd/george-butte...r/8015133.html

What "upset" me was this on the details of the Decca CD - at the bottom -

Cheery stuff, when one is looking for music, eh! Oh, well, on with the Yo-Ho-Ho/Bah Humbug season.

We had a card through the post featuring a special Christmas offer of 10% off the cost of emptying our septic tank (which we don’t, in fact, have). It was beautifully decorated in full colour with little festive pixies dancing around.

    Clever seasonal marketing, I suppose.

I was wandering round a local town this afternoon, and noticed a new shop. Someone outside was photographing the signs and the shop window. When i looked into the window I saw a notice "X Funeral Directors coming soon". Perhaps they delayed the opening till after Christmas so as not to have an opening with dressing in silly red hats, the handing out of mince pies and mulled wine!

      Maybe demand is increasing!

You mean when ham sandwiches and a cup of tea would not clash!

When I read 'A Shropshire Lad' recently (in preparation for a visit to Shropshire) I was struck by how much the poems were about death, with a couple even advocating suicide, so perhaps Google assumed that anyone interested in the poems would be of a fairly morbid disposition.

And I suppose both Butterworth and Houseman are no longer with us!

I was a bit cross to have bought two packs of Christmas cards from a certain charity (which I will not name). Inside on the right-hand side it had a usual greeting, Happy Christmas, Best wishes for &c &c, fine; on the left-hand side, at the bottom, it said: "Worried about cancer? Contact us on ..."
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Clearly Housman's poems have a death theme, but I'm pretty sure it was something else which triggered the connection with funeral directors. Butterworth wrote an orchestral piece called The Banks of Green Willow, and that probably caused the match.

They'll doubtless be praying for a cold snap!

i bought quite a few cards from one of the charities that the Proms supports, and hurredly had a look at a remaining card. ' Caring for children etc' seems okay, if rather sad. Yours sounds over the top ff.
