Actually there is no longer an institution in this country called the Patent Office.

Repeatedly today, including at least twice during this evening's Performance on 3, "Moog" mispronounced to rhyme with "droog", rather than the correct pronunciation which rhymes with "vogue".

Thanks for that snippet of wisdom. Evidently I've mispronounced it for most of my life.

Many do, but Robert Moog, who 'invented' the Moog synthesizer, was most insistent about the correct way to pronounce his family name, and thus the name of the instruments, though I think he eventually got fed up with correcting the mispronunciation.

There are some things which are beyond the individual's control, even though they are pretty sure they're right. Leave it a decade or two and they will discover they were wrong all the time.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

When the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is conducted by Grant Llewellyn, the BBC Radio 3 announcer invariably makes a special effort to pronounce his surname as if it were spelt Llywelyn. Is this how he says it himself?

Mispronouncing a name is sometimes understandable if someone isn't available to advise, but there's no way one can forgive ITV3's sponsorship advert for "early evening dramas" - Airwick "mold wine fragrance". I contacted the company, suggesting they meant "mulled wine" but only received a polite thank-you-but-we-haven't-really-read-your-email reply.

Honestly! Who do they think they are?! The BBC?!

when is the name Powell pronounced Pole and when Powl ?

or is it a matter of personal choice ?

Radio 4 tells me that the scouting Baden-Pole died this day 1941

Different Powell families choose different pronunciations for the name.

I suspect it may have something to do with how far they are - or wd wish to be seen as being - from their Welsh roots - it being originally ap Howell...

It is very much personal choice. But, once you know the pronunciation that someone prefers, there's no excuse for getting it wrong. I don't know how Baden-Powell pronounced it, but Anthony Powell was definitely 'Pole'.

I seem to recall Lady BP pronouncing it pow-el.
