Certainly, I cannot possibly honestly opine that rail privatisation was a particularly unhappy episode in my travelling life considering the even worse shambles (imho) that went before it!

However, that is quite different from your '"interpretation" that I consider the current set-up to be 'all blue-sky ok' ...

That's an interesting point. I would say that British Rail just before th privatisation was the best we ever had it in my lifetime. There were separate operaters, all working within the national team, and no money was diverted to ensure fat cats made a profit.

It hurts me to say this but nearly all major railway initiatives came from the Conservatives: Electrification of the West and East Coast mainlines, the Channel Tunnel, and now the Midland Mainline and Trans-Pennine. However HS2 and GWR electrification were really Labour's idea, but these did not progress beyond that.

Against this, we have to remember Beeching, Serpel and Privatisation - all Tory ideas, and nothing to be proud of at all.
