I largely agree with these comments. The compensation culture is an American import. Arguably it didn't exist here under Macmillan in 1963 because of an ability for all then to earn money through employment as well as the existence of a free health service. Government's emphasis on health and safety is presented as protection for individuals' welfare but is principally about the protection of organisations' finances including its own.

Now there we do agree, Simon. I know it began in the USA but Mrs T did urge the introduction of the Sue, Grabbit and Run society in this country. In her eyes every public servant needed taking to court and sacking/made to resign. Sounds fairly topical?

I cannot open my mail/email without being offered compensation for fictitious assaults. The same crooked rogues accost me in the local market trying to convince me that I have been hard done by.

on my travels I keep my eyes open for daft products, awards, and signs.

Daftest product of 2011 by a mile is Vegetarian Haggis.

Daftest sign is the one saying " do not drink" under the water supply pipe into a urinal near dorchester.

And I see asda have cleaned up by taking "Turkey supermarket of the year" for a second year in a row.

                      Hurrah !!

I bought a new soup pan/casserole today. Got it home, examined it, and found it was marked "suitable for use with foodstuffs".

                        So that's a relief.

good thing you thought to check though.
Might have been like one of those chocolate teapots.

Hmm. Well, you know, you never can tell what a child under the age of 3 might get up to with a plastic bookmark!

I would like to know how the police are going to identify the footage they are going to review? Is it going to jump up shouting 'yoo hoo, I'm film of a criminal act'? Or perhaps the police, not having second sight, are going to view it all to find the footage that might be relevant to whatever it is they are investigating.

As for the Olympics, if the USA athletes are too feart to come to the UK without the protection of ground to air missiles, perhaps they'd at least like to pay for them? I don't see why I should.

Ah, Flossie. So nice to have you back.

How are the police going to identify footage relating to criminal activity? Well, obviously they will view every second of every minute of every frame of the footage from every taxi in the UK, just as at the moment there are a team of police officers whose sole duty is to review every second of the thousands of hours of CCTV footage that is filmed by every security camera in the UK every day....although in Guardian cloud-cuckoo land there are probably some who believe that is actually the case..........

As for your second "point" about the Olympics, forgive me, but I've always believed that if a foreign sports team, politician, dignitary or even tourist decided to visit the UK, then it was our duty to protect them from harm. Or do you think that we should simply not bother? When the Israeli athletes were massacred by the Arafat sponsored terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics, was it not Germany's responsibility to protect them?
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.
