Once upon a time there was a world in which people thought there were all sorts of things to aspire to, and in which they didn't equate not having a lot of money with living a life of mediocrity. Of course that was in the bad old days.

"Saucer of milk for the man with the Edwardian bike !"

Indeed John, it's very telling that some would equate not having huge amounts of money as having a mediocre life.

            That'll do for starters
I have a large enough place to hold a few Steinways (although I don't have them) and have started piano lessons after a break of 33+ years of having played to approximately diploma level - and the uphill struggle is heartbreaking. Never give it up - pass that on.

Oh, and I stopped working a year ago - and love it. Never been happier, mainly just sitting (or sleeping) and dreaming. Maybe that's why the piano is such an uphill struggle!

No reason at all, although millionaires these days (in, say, Britain or the Eurozone) are hardly rarities, but why on earth anyone would seriously consider that millionaire status is something to which specificall to "aspire" I have no idea. Nowadays, "millionaire" to some no longer means having at least a million pounds' /euros' worth of disposable assets but an annual income in seven figures - and there are sufficient billionaires around the world for that status to have rather more clout than that of the mere common or garden millionaire. Anyone who genuinely believes (or has allowed him/herself to be coerced into believing) that refusal or inability to join the millionaires' club sentences him/her to a life of mediocrity must have a very warped idea about life and values - and not only because having, say, a mere £975,000 in the bank just doesn't cut it, either. Wealth and financial security mean different things to different people and at different times; the absence of the former does not of itself illustrate a life of mediocrity and even the absence of the second, however negative in other respects, doesn't necessarily do so either.

I think there is too much focus in education on "Striving to succeed" and "achieving your goals" (hence some of the North Korean style slogans one finds all over schools) and not enough about "how to be"..........which will only get worse (but hopefully fade ) next year with the Olympics (its the OLYMPIC GAMES not London 2012 )

I wonder how much I would need to hand over to Roger Norrington to persuade him to go into retirement? Whatever the amount, I would consider it a worthwhile investment.

I don't go in for EuroMillion or anything else because I would not expect to win and won't waste what I have.

Off topic, has anyone else held Premium Bonds since their inception, but hardly won a bean. I have, but I know if I cash them in they will immediately win a million pounds. If I did win I suppose I would help my family, try to get good private health care and give a bit to charities, then time for a few luxuries.

Upon my birth, my parents bought two Premium Bonds for me. At the age if 14, one of them won be £25 - a lot of money in 1960. With that £25 they invested in 25 new premium Bonds. I never won anything again, ever.
