If I won the EuroMillions Rollover jackpot, I would.....

The 'Stormy Weather' thread prompted me to reveal my fantasy in the event that I were to scoop the £100million-plus jackpot (I never buy a ticket if it's less than 9 digits... ).

To recap: I would acquire (i) a seafront place on the Suffolk coast, e.g. Southwold (ii) an ocean-front property in Santa Monica, Ca. (iii) a lovely crewed ocean yacht with cabins and bathrooms capacious enough for my 6ft 5 frame - i.e. a BIG one! - and (iv) an apartment in Lucca, in the northern sector of the historic centre, near S. Frediano.

From May to December 27th, I would be based in London and Suffolk with occasional jaunts (especially in autumn) to the place in Lucca and to the boat. Then I'd decamp to Santa Monica for New Year - perfect winter weather for me - and alternate between there and the boat from January until the days start to lengthen in England.

Open house in all locations for (most) FOR3 forum-members, naturally

    Well that's my fantasy.

What fantasies do others entertain, should they suddenly find a credit balance north of £100 million on their current account?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

In Cyril Connolly's The Unquiet Grave he gives us his own daydream - including, somewhere in a magic circle embracing the Dordogne, Quercy, the Aveyron and the Gers, a "golden classical house, three stories high with oeil de bœuf windows looking out over water. A magnolia Delavayi growing up the wall, a terrace for winter, a great tree for summer and a lawn for games; a wooded hill behind and a river below, then a sheltered garden indulgent to fig and nectarine, and, at an angle of the wall, belvedere, book-lined like that of Montaigne, wizard of the magic circle, with this motto from him: 'La liberté et l'oisiveté qui sont mes maîtresses qualités'."

That'll do for the time being...

        May I come and visit?

What a fantastic quote - including a gem from Montaigne which makes me think of that Apollinaire poem set by Poulenc:

Ma chambre a la forme d'une cage,
Le soleil passe son bras par la fenêtre.
Mais moi qui veux fumer pour faire des mirages
J'allume au feu du jour ma cigarette.
Je ne veux pas travailler - je veux fumer.

The Suffolk coast from Covehithe to Orford Ness is absolutely my favourite part of England Caliban but if I were you I'd get a house just a little bit back from the edge - one of the country's fastest eroding coastlines

Otherwise you might end up like Mr Boggis http://www.bbc.co.uk/suffolk/content..._feature.shtml

I would buy a Steinway and start having piano lessons.
But I would need to buy a bigger house to fit it in.Oh and give up work.
                  That'll do for starters

As the leader of Wikileaks may be in Sweden for a while, I would feel a moral duty to bring in Wikileaks II.

Secondly, my new tabloid newspaper. This will have a distinctly radical, anti-capitalist, agenda but lack some of the usual scruples of that ilk. In other words, it will be written in Sun speak and have page 3 women, celebrity nonsense, easy competitions and tons of football. The aim would be to get the biggest daily readership.

Thirdly, a company to manufacture a series of conveyer belts with affixed seats to be built between the roads and pavements of major cities. These would move at 10mph and stop for 90 seconds every 7 minutes.

I'd commission an orchestral work from Harrison Birtwistle for starters, Then I'd pay for Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw to play and record the complete Mahler symphonies for my own label. Assuming there was any cash left I'd do the luxury stuff.

Among other things, I'd give the Elgar Society Edition enough money to secure the cost of every volume.

What about buying the island of Ischia, Caliban, or at least the little Walton estate? Then you could invite us there in the summer

Yes I would hope to engage in a project like this too ; I would also like to support/endow some young musicians through one or other of the music colleges, and engage in a number of other charitable endeavours, plus see family members right...

Would there be enough left to found an orchestra??

A great idea. Is it for sale? I doubt it - seems to be running rather well despite Lady W's death last year: http://www.lamortella.org/en/ (I love your idea of a "little estate" saly )
