The urban myth is that he arranged "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1940 for a Boston Symphony concert, and police arrested him because of an antiquated Massachusetts law making it illegal to "tamper with public property". In fact on digging around, sadly the truth seems to be less lurid. He was told by police in 1944 that his arrangement did render him liable to a $100 fine, but that no action would be taken. The mugshot dated April 1940 was apparently taken simply as part of his visa renewal process.
Oh well.
