For once, mandryka, I have heard of the subject of yet another of your uplifting threads, and I am sorry to hear of his death.

Having said that, I really think you display an unhealthy obsession with mortality.

    Why not try another hobby?

Perhaps you should get out more and "think" less; does it not occur to you that your remark here is pretty insensitive?

I much enjoyed his performances at Covent Garden of Simon Boccanegra, Rigoletto and Mandryka. A fine Baritone.

I think that the problem is the rather blunt way that Mandryka puts it, viz:

            X:Dead

            Would

X(1925-2011) for example be any better?

            Other possibilities might be:

            In Memoriam X
            X:RIP
            Ascended to Glory: X

            etc.

Took the Grauniad rather along time to catch up with this piece of "news" didn't it? Has their entire stable of obituarists been on extended leave, or has there been a backlog of deaths to deal with?

To whom, pray? Unless any of the deceased's nearest and dearest are frequenters of this forum I cannot see how this post offends anyone other than, perhaps, the OP.

I would prefer X(1925-2011). "In Memoriam" and "RIP" are too sanctimonious and pompous, particularly when the deceased is not a personal acquaintance.

"X: Dead" rather seems to suggest that the OP takes a personal pleasure in the deceased's demise.

No, it does not, as you would know if you had a modicum of intelligence.

To make the sentiment clearer for people of your kind, I appended a sad face emoticon, to indicate how I feel about this news.

Once again, you are extrapolating (look it up, please): making presumptions about my intentions based on non-existent evidence.

I don't mind your being a fool, but could you please confine your foolishness to other peoples' threads, or - better yet - start your own? There's a good chap. :)

Better yet than that, why not confine yourself to twitter, where your banalities can vanish into a void that befits them

We seem to be degenerating into gratuitous vituperative twittering here, without any need to frequent the birds' site!

Composer Gunther Schuller immortalized seven works of Klee's in his Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee. (Wikipedia)

Should I start a poll on the preferred formula for introducing obituaries? I'm loath to start a separate board for obituaries as that would upgrade the subject to the level of The Early Music Show and Performance; a thread would be a possibility, though the title would always be a general one.

It does seem to me that the formula Ingvar Wixell (1931-2011) is both respectful and uncontentious.

And back to the subject, here is 'O Mimi, tu più non torni' with Carreras, Wixell as Marcello ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

But can you explain to me how the formula 'X X: Dead' is somehow contentious? Being, as it is, a statement of objective fact.
