Never heard the Edith Piaf version. But I do remember Les Compagnons de la Chanson (Jimmy Brown: Dead)

Is it just me or does this song always sound the most over-sentimentalised tosh when sung in English YET sounds almost beautifully folk-like in French? The purer singing of the backing groups with Piaf takes away a sloppiness. The same singers (Les Compagnons) sound oily in their English version.

Yes, Patrick. I went through a phase of singing along with Mireille Mathieu and Jacques Brel records as a kid and my French master was shocked at the improvement in my French. When I was bullied into teaching lower school French I used chanson and children's songs a lot. I think one could teach history, biology or economics well if the right songs were written.
