Shetland Blacks were the potato I was thinking about which are no longer available here. As to vint's Top 10 I think mine are:
    1. All cabbages except white
2, Purple sprouting broccoli & kale
    3. Sprouts (yes, really!)
    4. Leeks
    5. Runner beans
    6. Cauliflower (a new convert to this)
    7. Sweet potatoes (and regular potatoes of course)
    8. Parsnips
    9. Celery
    10. Tomatoes (although a fruit not a veg)

And where exactly is your shed Mr. GG .............. Has it got a strong padlock?

Waitrose teamed up with Scottish growers and heavily promoted all the varieties a couple of years ago (inc a nice one called Arran) and it was lovely to have a change from the usual King Ed and Maris (Pink Firs are available from my greengrocer, I bought them yesterday) Now whether it was just here (most of our potatoes come from Pembrokeshire) there was no significant demand and Waitrose still promote Scottish spuds in their other stores I don't know.

Yes, but not tasteless polymorphous tomatoes, please, please, eat your veggies when in season and support British farming. Who wants strawberries (oops that's another fruit - but remember, oranges are not the only fruit) out of season, or asparagus (anyone tried the new out of season asparagus gown in Wales?) Lentils are bliss, have you tried Beluga ones but, being dried, can come from anywhere. Samphire, well, there's a luvvie veggie if ever there was one, trust Hugh F-W to forage and it's suddenly it is the on-dit along with sea asters. They are weeds, although weeds are lovely. Put dandelions into a salad or nasturtium leaves, ooh yes, lovely and peppery (mind the blackfly - although they are extra protein!)

Edit: I would like Lat's insights into aubergines and why, for goodness sake it's been lively, but why he feels for them, is he a chef or does he have a polytunnel?

                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

... and of course, we must not forget Nix v Hedden, establishing that (in the US, at least) your tomato is a vegetable...

(which reminds me that (in Europe, at least) it has been established that your carrot is a fruit... )

A vegetable is eaten with savoury meals (garnishes often excluded) and fruits are sweet and are puddings.

What have botanists got to do with anything?

How was your stuffed aubergine - and the saturated fat content? (cross referencing the other thread)

Who do you get your veg boxes from and why do you choose to have one rather than buy from your local greengrocer?

Edit: Your last post, yes, fruits are sweet but we eat them with meat, like roast apples and pears with pork or raspberries with lamb don't we?

                            Maybe it has happened.

Elsewhere decantor has mentioned CotW having 'acres of A.Scarlatti'. (Azuki Scarlatti is, as you will all know, the botanical name for the Asian red bean. )
