big classical collection FREE

I've been contacted by a fellow near Middlesborough who wants to dispose of a large collection of classical LPs and 78s and boxed sets FREE to anyone who will personally pick up the whole lot.

He has kindly typed out the full details of each disc, a quite fine collection I must say. Anyone interested can PM or e-mail me for his e-mail address.

John, many thanks for posting this. Sadly, for me, its too far to go for the rather few items I would want from that list. I dont want to spoil someone else's chances to snap up such a good offer, so I'll keep quiet for now. However, if the chap gets no takers in a day or two, post again and I can make a few suggestions on how to dispose of them to a good home.

Well umslopogaas, I've had no offers to take these records from any of the places I've posted at.

What can you suggest for preserving this collection?

John, I'm not sure this will be very much help, but my instinct would be to try a dealer. Problem is, all the ones I know are a long way from Middlesborough, which is not a part of the UK I know at all. However, if there is any possibility of getting the collection down south, my top choice would be Ben Darnton of Ben's Collectors Records, in Tunsgate, Guildford: tel. 01483 224234 Tues - Sat 10.00 - 6.00. He's a great guy and I've bought many bargains in his shop. He sells at very reasonable prices and he buys anything, though the downside is he doesnt pay much. However, what he would pay would go some way to defraying the costs of getting the stuff to him.

You could also try Fine Records of George Street, Hove, tel. 01273 723345. Julian Pelling is the owner, but his business partner Ian Wallace handles the LPs. They would probably pay a bit more than Ben, but the downside there is that they would be more picky about what they took, so you'd have to be prepared to dump the remainder on a charity shop.

Another approach would be to try some of the dealers who advertise in the back pages of the Gramophone. There are several who appear to operate nationally, though I dont know any of them. One that has a good reputation is Mr Watson of Dundee, tel. 0113 2534010.

Or, perhaps, try the specialist magazine Classical Recordings Quarterly for advice. The editor is Alan Sanders, contact details at the website //crq.org.uk He will probably suggest advertising the collection in the magazine, which is published quarterly. Alan used to deal in secondhand LPs himself, but I'm not sure if he still does since he took on the editing job.

You could try music colleges, though again I expect that they'd only want some of the material. I am reliably told by a practising musician that there are actually people in chamber groups who borrow CDs and LPs from (perhaps their former) music colleges, and use these as a guide to performance. Apparently some older recordings/performances are hard to come by. I think typically they're looking for string quartets and that kind of thing though, rather than large scale works, hence many in your collection would not be of so much interest.

Slightly off topic but local music colleges are interested usually in unwanted books, scores and CDs.
I had a slightly faulty copy of a large book on Britten's operas, one page missing ,and given to me at work by the Rep. After years of interest to me I rang a small local music school and they were round to collect it within an hour. I have also passed things like old postcards of musicians to the RCM who put them in their archives.

I have been watching the s-l-o-w development of this thread in stunned silence. Why isn't anyone interested? If I were living in the UK, I'd be round there pdq. My only problem would then be how to transport some 200 LPs back home.

The problem is the location, Middlesborough, it's up north and 200-300km from most members here.

Well well, so it is. Thanks ff, you learn something new every day. I would have sworn on a stack of bibles it was Middlesborough. But you are right, its too far away from my base in Devon to countenance a visit for the few items I would want to keep: the transport and accommodation costs would far outweigh the value of the records.

From the list the one that shone out like a beacon was rachmaninov Sym 1 LenPO Sanderling - I had this on an Artia LP - introduced me to the work - it has never appeared on CD. However, although I have relatives living not too far away I fear threats of divorce if I suggested collction of the collection.

I'm in the South East. And all my 12 note pop tunes compositions are on the record player. Which incidentally doesn't work very well.
