    Dead People: Dead

A quick scan down the Platform 3 front page shows no fewer than 9 threads- started by Mandryka- with the title:-

    So and So:- Dead.
In the vast majority of cases, these are people I've never heard of, and even when they ARE people on my horizon, I really am not bothered. We all die.

I am beginning to think this is less a discussion board than an obituary column.....
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

...well sometimes we must endure the living dead Mr Pee

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

If you're not bothered, it's surely simple enough to ignore them. Speaking for myself, I find it interesting - especially as some of these people have led remarkable lives.

Some people probably find these announcements dead interesting.

I devour the obituary pages of the Telegraph, Guardian and Indo with relish each day.

I find the people written about, their lives, their triumphs, their disappoinments, their quirks to be of far more interest than living people in the world.

Death noitces also, the only sure way of establishing whether I need to get on with the day or not!

I know there was a certain disquiet about the use of RIP for heading such posts, and I'd agree that there's a presumptiousness to that, but now we've gone to 'Joe Bloggs - Dead' which is a bit blunt. Can't we find a middle ground. How about some of the following alternatives:

"Dame Chlamidia Crumpet, the distinguished arts benefactoress ...

            ... is no more

... is pushing up the daisieis

            ... has left the building

            ... has ceased to be

... has been returned to sender

... is at the Pearly Gates

            ... is at room temperature

... is dining with the angels

            ... is learning the harp

            ... has sprouted wings

            ... is very asleep.

ps. Edgelyrob over on the Edmundo 'Peanuts' Ros thread has even found an RIP smilie. Whatever will they think of next?!

Mr Pee - I object to your ascribing authorship of all the 'dead' threads to Mandryka - I started one (& I'm very upset that nobody's responded - I thought at least Amateur would have been interested )

If they get cremated, would it be RIP and Burn?

                    I've always thought 'Edmundo Ros (1910 - 2011)' a very tasteful formula
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yuk. Even patum peperium wouldn't disguise the flavour of the D Tel - try putting it in the toaster maybe?

What about putting all obits on a separate thread with a title such as Recent Obituaries, and the name.

it's a good idea salymap. as are birth and death dates...rather than 'rip' etc

personally, i find obits really fascinating ...especially when i hadn't heard of whoever prior. 'last word' on r4, and broadsheet obits are usually great value, much more revealing, than accounts made when whoever was living.

where the deceased has left documentation, as creatives do, it's hard to imagine them 'gone', if their legacy lives on ...which is arguably what makes every variety of 'creativity' particularly worthwhile initially. this aspect seems worth remembering at the best of times, but particularly in the current economic climate. so, all in all, the more attention to obits the better in my book.

therefore, a complaint that obits happen 'too regularly' has comic potential .... but not a lot else!
