Mine's normally like a whistling kettle on the boil. Sometimes (I think if I'm tired or have a cold) it's also like voices murmuring in the distance or in another room, & sometimes, as you say, like a bath filling. I've had it for getting on for 30 years

A while back a board member (I think) described his tinnitus as being like having a relatively small jet aeroplane taxiing around inside your head and that's the best description I've heard of my experience of tinnitus.

Mine sometimes changes pitch and for that moment I'm incapable of doing anything, because it's so transfixing.

I've also found that it gets louder when I'm in bed at night because there's no visual input and no background noise to cover it. So I always have the radio on quietly to distract me from the tinnitus and it's rarely a problem.

I've had mine since I was about 5 so for me it's completely normal, sadly.

I've found my digital hearing aids to be a great boon once I got used to them. I find that you have to wear them all day and then you don't notice them much. On taking them off, the ceiling appears to drop to about a foot above my head, such is the difference that they make.

      Best of luck, salymap

Mine's a loud hissing noise. Permanent Quite loud. 27 years. Self inflicted. Loud music in headphones, very loud concerts and not wearing earplugs whilst surrounded by amps.

Concerts are ok, tv often pointless.

Prescribed hearing aids at local audiology department, but too vain to wear them. Been told I'll be dependent on hearing aids by age sixty - am early fifties.

The design has changed dramatically Beefy and they're barely noticeable now, particularly if you have FA Cup ears like mine

Yes, people have said that. My ears are beautiful - they just don't work.

Surely not worse than this famous set of lugs?

I've had my hearing tested & the audiologist said that it's perfectly good. I'm afraid I don't believe him - it's my hearing, after all, so I should know.

Mine are not dissimilar, Flossie and like most people's, they're getting bigger with every passing year

My neighbour, had his 70th birthday in August, was a nightmare talking to him, he's now got some bionic earpieces, can hardly see them, I shall enquire as to what they are (suspect v. expensive)

Do you know, some men's ears are really funny aren't they? Women's ears are always neat.. I wonder why that is ....... only in an idle moment of speculation, no need to get anyone else involved in genetic theories!

I shall pass over your remarks about men's ears, and (unlike Sherlock Holmes *) I haven't made a close study of women's ears. But you can take my remark of "ear ear!" as agreement.

More seriously, I'm sorry, but in some respects relieved, to see that I'm not alone in suffering from tinnitus. I like my music loud, when appropriate, but I haven't done what Beefy and many rock performers appear to have done. I wonder if a love of music has something to do with it.

                        Non progress report...

At my age I should be more patient but the tinnitus is worse when I take out the pesky things and I've not really heard any music clearly yet.

                        Rome wasn't built etc...

At least I'm not alone on these boards, I blame my headphones for this, plus age.

I have very large ears which seem to be getting more prominent in my dotage, but then maybe that helped me in career as a mixer !

PS Russell Tovey had sticky out ears, which hasn't blighted his talent !

Surely it's the hole in the middlethat counts, not the size of the ear lobe. I find when I put my spex on I dislodge the bit of the hearing aid that is supposed to stay behind my shell like ears.

                              saly,

That conjures up a disturbing image! Actually the flappy bit does matter, without it our sound location would suffer a bit, that's why some animals can rotate their ears. It's fun watching the aardvarks at the Zoo doing just that!

If I cup my hand behind my ears, the reception improves tremendously, so maybe if I had even bigger flappers my hearing would be outstanding

I know what you mean about the spex/aid interaction salymap - very frustrating.
