I remember when she sang on the radio in the 1930s, I think with the Henry Hall Orchestra.Latterly, ofcourse,
Betty, pulling pints and serving Hotpot at the Rovers Return. RIP a trouper of the old school.

Does your lack of conviction refer to her demise or her age, Mandryka?

If the former, the why post?

If the latter then you are not a gentleman

As a long-standing Corrie stalwart she will be missed.

Who now is left to offer "'otpot, Ken?"

Mandryka, I was holding back: I knew you would not let us down! The Betty she reminded me of was ex-Tiller Girl Betty Boothroyd (now 82). As saly says, a trouper, a pro. (Both)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... this is, of course, in its way, sad.

Personally, however, I stopped watching t'Street with the departure of Annie Walker. No one could command a bar with just the raised eyebrow as she could - all her successors mere epigones...

          Never-the-less -

Tracey Barlow, judging by last week's episodes....

I had cause, in the course of my - ahem - professional duties, to meet and shake her hand, a rather rigid but very warm claw as I recall, but the smile and the sparkle in the eyes were heart-dissolving

A star and a real trouper, as saly says.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

What a smashing, I said, what a smashing opportunity!

Yes - a sad loss. But I have to wholeheartedly agree with you there, on the Annie Walker-front, Vinteuil. Doris Speed was hors concours. And in support of this assertion, may I place before the
                members of the jury.....

Yes ff I used to love hearing Betty Boothroyd on TV in political exchanges. Show business was never far away from her wonderful timing. When she retired as Speaker her comment "Be happy for me" was pure theatrical timing. Another wonderful Betty.

I tried, I honestly tried, to get into Coronation Street, urged on by some here. Well, I thought Mad Becky was brill, also Stephanie Cole and her one liners, but the rest of them, they are just cartoon characters aren't they? No-one can actually believe in them, although, it is the campest soap opera ever. Sad Betty Driver has died, but at 91, a good innings.

Anyone else noticed, Mandy is always first up with the deaths announcements?

                            Yes, our resident undertaker!

A neighbour anf family friend met Betty in the 1930's when he (and she) was a child. Apparently, his father was something in the theatre at that time and he met many stars of that era. Only told me about it a couple of weeks ago and it was fascinating. He also saw King George V and Queen Mary - how many people living can say that?

Met her in a pub a few weeks back - her local - we, friends and I, were out walking and had booked in for lunch. I used to know her years ago
