    Derivative work - what?

I have listened to this curiosity by Eldon Rathburn several times (why? you may well ask ...) -
Concertino for Banjo and String Quartet - e.g http://open.spotify.com/track/4grQ8dspWpenheXL49IVcP which is the last movement.

It's very reminiscent of something else. I just can't quite figure out what. It's one of those tip of the tongue things - I feel I've almost got it, but then really not sure what!

I think that the whole piece is based on other works - possibly by accident rather than design.

I may still be "working" on this for quite a while.

The Scottish Melody, on the same CD is rather attractive, and possibly a relief from the twangy banjo, so don't write Rathburn off totally - http://open.spotify.com/track/1q2TcySNVw5j1jE2PHrzex...

I 've always had the same problem with the Bruckner Overture in G minor.

      Re the Bruckner Overture

The opening bar is reminiscent of Beethoven - Egmont overture.

Then the piece meanders in the styles of Mendelssohn, Schumann, even Brahms, Bruckner! etc.
At one point I even thought we were going to get Weber. I feel the strongest flavour is Schumann - after the opening.

That's the best I can do so far.
