I don't recall listening or chatting. memory is usually a plus point with me, so I'm worried now.

Perhaps I thought you were talking about cider.......

            A Symphony well worth learning,IMO,is Weinberg's 8th 'Polish Flowers'.

Weinberg has become something of an obsession for me lately.
This work is incredibly moving, pessimistic yet hopeful,tearjerking,heartwrenching.....it's got everything.
It's on you tube and in the Naxos library.
The Polish text is on the Naxos website and can be google-translated (I can't find the English on the web).
The Warsaw Dogs section will blow your socks off!!!

              What a great thread!

I've ordered the Weinberg. Looking forward to hearing it.

As a lifelong Brucknerite I have shamefully neglected or ignored nos 1 and 2, and am currently enjoying 2 (Naxos/Tintner) with Robert Simpson as my guide - as he says, "a most beautiful symphony, too little known". I have also rediscovered Shostakovich 15 thanks to the recent thread, discovered 4 and have just enjoyed Stephen Johnson's BAL on 8. So well trodden paths of the repertoire for many, but.....

Hmm, I suppose I should know Malcolm Arnold's and William Alwyn's better!?!?!?

I was listening to Alwyn's 1 and 3 only the other day - very likeable music but perhaps not much more than that . I have always struggled with Arnold - his Symphony 1 I cannot abide.

As another lifelong Brucknerite I am ashamed to say that I still cannot get on with the 2nd Symphony. The others pose no problems at all (even the Symphony No '0'). It isn't for want of trying either as I have Karajan, Wand, Jochum, Solti, Giulini and Stein on my shelves. Like the Brahms Piano Concerto No 1 (another once intractable work) it will click into place eventually. Have to say though that the scherzo of the 2nd is wonderful, one of Bruckner's finest. Will keep on trying with the rest.

Did anyone hear the Korngold F#m the other morning on "Essential" Classics? I'm normally a fan but couldn't get into this at all. (And bits sounded to me as though they'd been cribbed from Holst 36 years earlier.)
