George Baker had a fine long career, often playing characters much younger than his real self. I saw him shopping recently in our local Marks and Sparks food department. He lived just outside Salisbury and did not have to travel far to Romsey to film Inspector Wexford, his best known character. Like Jack Warner's George Dixon character he played the kind of old fashioned copper you liked and trusted. When I was a kid he seemed to have been on the large and small screens for ever. Although a Northener by birth, he was a strong supporter of his adopted Wiltshire village, West Lavington, and was awarded his MBE for services to the West Lavington Youth Club.

      R.I.P.
