Did he actually composed it for the film or did the film use his music?

He did compose it for the film, but the producers then decided to commision Ron Goodwin instead; most of the music used in the film is Goodwin's, with the exception of the "Battle in the Air" sequence, and a brief excerpt from the the March which Walton composed for the film. The special edition DVD gives you the option of watching the complete film with the Walton score instead.
