Re vinteuil's question: indeed, at least we tried. It's a tricky, but not impossible challenge. I just wanted to get more suggestions outside standard repertoire. The larger point is that this thread, light-hearted fun as it is, actually encapsulates one of the problems with classical music, namely the reliance on the same old names and works over and over again.

I'm afraid that's right, and in my own case reflects a lack of stand-out works by living composers strong enough to have enlisted my memory.

[and, anyway, bsp's comment doesn't hold water - on the page before he set the challenge works are cited by Sally Beamish and Gerald Barry, and of dead composers, Thomas Lindley and Hans Sommer can neither be described as "the same old names over and over again".]

You should have asked for a dozen then you could have had the odd Birdwhistle in the old whatsit tree! Anyway sorry I missed this request, not that I could have added much but at least I might not have bothered with the Mahler! I did wonder why we'd suddenly gone exclusive!
