PS: For fhg, gradus accidentally wrote it backwards, namely it should be:

Perhaps the cairn terrier "pictured within" enjoyed running up and down silken ladders...

          Anyway, Elgar: Owls
or Andrew Schultz: Silken Weave (if the Elgar connection fails)

Yes - I know the piece (it was used as the theme tune to a BBC TV production of David Copperfield back in the '70s and has haunted my memory ever since); I just don't see a connection with ladders, silken or otherwise!

                (I get the Dracula/Mina connection )

I think I sussed (or have a guess on) the Mina <-> ladder connection, namely that Mina is a brand name of a ladder, e.g.: http://www.qualityhomeware.com.au/sh...-towel-ladder/

I knew that you'd get the Dracula/Mina connection . I was just surprised that no one on the Forum posted a reply about vampires, or Transylvania, or some other similar connection. (Unfortunately, I think the Jan Stoeckart item will remain unconnected in this thread - shame, I'm kind of proud of that one also.)

Since you mentioned David Copperfield, I'll run with that. How about:

Dominick Argento: Miss Havisham's Wedding Night
